- Established in 1979, Wuchopperen has grown significantly and today provides a comprehensive suite of primary health and social health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Cairns and Atherton. Wuchopperen Health Service is located in Manoora, approximately 5km from the central business district of Cairns. The clinic is AGPAL accredited. As an Aboriginal community controlled service, it operates a bulk billing service with the support of clinic staff, ie. Medical Officers, Clinic Supervisor, Registered Nurses, Health Workers and administrative support staff. Clients are predominantly Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander and the service operates with a "walk-in" system in the mornings and an appointment system in the afternoons. There is an average of 70 to 80 clients through the clinic on a daily basis. The tropical paradise of Cairns in FNQ is home to a diverse, multicultural community of around 160,000 people and is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. The Cairns region with its unique environment is renowned nationaly and internationally as a premier tourism destination and has a tropical climate with generally hot and humid summers and milder, drier winters. The region has the usual range of services with major shopping centre, primary and secondary schooling, sport and recreation facilities and a range of health services.
