ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER HEALTH - A HEALTHWORKERS PERSPECTIVE: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled health services were established to provide comprehensive primary health care service to our people. These health services provide primary health care to our people in a culturally safe environment to make our people feel more comfortable and relaxed when dealing with their health issues. Employing and training local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff is very beneficial to the health service. eg. Receptionist and Health Workers provide clinical duties, health education and promotion, programs and workshops are delivered in a culturally appropriate manner. We provide a service to our community and we work towards achieving better health outcomes for our people. It is vital that we as health workers provide the education to our people so they can have a better understanding of managing their health. Training is available also but learning the hands on way is more effective. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is very interesting and has to be looked at holistically. Some of the issues our people deal with are hard to comprehend and can be a learning experience for those who have never worked with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community is certainly a challenging position, but one that is very rewarding also. We are here to better the health of our people and the only way we can do this is to work as a team to provide our people with a comprehensive primary health care service. |
